Lately, I’ve been all about avocados. I’m putting them in and on everything. When I was browsing through Fresh Happy Tasty, I stumbled upon Jane’s recipe for guacamole that had ginger in it — uh, say what?? I could possibly have totally missed the boat on this one and everyone else is on board the ginger guacamole change. BUT if you haven’t heard about this whole ginger guacamole situation, let me enlighten you.

Ginger and avocado just works. So, of course, ginger guacamole just works. I tried it once because of Jane’s recipe, switched up a few things off of her already fantastic recipe, and have since had it at least three or four more times – totally addicted.

Quick, mega important caveat: If you do not like ginger, you will not like this. I know this seems obvious, but you really have to like fresh ginger because it is definitely a dominant flavor in this dip. So, if you’re not a ginger fan, do yourself a favor and let this one pass (or just omit the ginger for a great guac in itself).

But if you’re a ginger lover, gather close – this is a recipe that will mix up your guacamole in the best way. The ginger is sweet, but also pungent. The flavor will blend with the guac, but you’ll still notice it in every bite. I love the tang that complements the smooth, mild avocado.

Also, can’t overestimate the importance of fresh lime. I do keep bottle lime and lemon juice in my fridge for ease in some recipes, but fresh lime is AMAZING, y’all. Put aside the 33 cents and pick up a lime next time you’re in the grocery store.

Serves: Serves 2 (easily doubled)
  • 1 avocado, mashed
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger
  • Juice of half of a lime
  • A handful of cilantro, roughly chopped
  • A few slices of red onion, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  1. Combine avocado, ginger, line, cilantro, red onion, salt, and pepper. Add more of anything to taste.
